Consumers perceive a brand to be cooler when it suggests it’s true to itself and follows its own motives regardless of individual or societal norms and expectations, according to a University of Colorado Boulder study involving Texas A&M University. However, the autonomous behavior of the brand needs to be contextually appropriate -- not over the top -- in order to be seen as cool as opposed to weird or rude, according to the paper published last week online and slated for the August edition of the Journal of Consumer Research.

LEAD 1000 successfully launches Leadership Studies Minor

A diverse class of students launched the Leadership Studies Minor this spring semester by completing LEAD 1000: Becoming a Leader. The newly created course serves as the foundation for the minor. Gordon Riggle, an accomplished leader in government, business and the military, as well as a long-time instructor of leadership courses on campus, taught the inaugural offering of LEAD 1000.

Collegiate Sports Club teams net five national championships in 2014

The University of Colorado club triathlon, swimming and diving, and free style ski teams all repeated as national champions in 2014, while the club lacrosse team won its first. This past weekend, the men's ultimate team won the national championship, bringing the total to five national championsips for Collegiate Sports Club teams in 2014.

As part of Colorado Literacy Week, on Monday afternoon Lt. Governor Joe Garcia visited a highly successful program at Godsman Elementary School in Denver that promotes not only literacy, but biliteracy in Spanish and English. In partnership with the -Boulder’s BUENO Center for Multicultural Education , the school has fully integrated the Literacy Squared® model . As a result, Godsman has achieved impressive reading and writing gains in both Spanish and English that have outpaced the district and the state.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory Director Charles Elachi and his senior management team will be on the University of Colorado Boulder campus May 22 to sign a memorandum of understanding with top university officials to continue and broaden a rich tradition of collaboration on space and Earth-science efforts going back nearly 50 years. Elachi will sign the MOU May 22 with -Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. Located in Pasadena, Calif., JPL is a federally funded research and development facility managed by the California Institute of Technology for NASA.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper will be on the University of Colorado Boulder campus May 16 to sign into law SB14-001, a $2 million appropriation to help fund the Colorado Energy Research Collaboratory that involves four state institutions and a number of industry partners.
