Internationally known American Indian artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith will present the opening keynote lecture in a series bringing cross-cultural perspectives on the arts to the University of Colorado at Boulder. Smith is an activist and spokeswoman for contemporary American Indian art and a painter and printmaker who exhibits internationally.

Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt To Give Policy Address At ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder Sept. 22

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt will make a policy address on climate change at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theater on the University of Colorado campus. The speech is free and open to the public, but space is limited and seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In case of inclement weather, Babbitt will speak in Macky Auditorium.

Bering Land Bridge Conference In Colorado Slated For Sept. 20

Scores of scientists from around the world will be in Colorado Sept. 20 to Sept. 23 for a conference on the prehistoric environment of the Bering land bridge, believed to be the migration corridor for the earliest North Americans. The conference was organized by the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Massachusetts with funding from the National Science Foundation. The three-day event will be held at The Nature Place Conference Center near Florissant, Colo.

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder Astronomers To Present Star Talks At Fiske Planetarium

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will continue its tradition of hosting monthly “star talks” by noted ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä astronomers this fall. The live presentations for adults and children 12 and over will include use of the star projector, special effects and the latest images from NASA and major observatories.

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder To Celebrate Chicano History Week, Sept. 17-19

The University of Colorado at Boulder Latino Advocacy Committee in conjunction with United Mexican American Students (UMAS) and the University of Colorado Student Union will present three events celebrating Chicano History Week next week. Events begin with the 1997 ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder Bienvenidos Celebration, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sept. 17, on the lawn north of Regent Hall. A welcome picnic for new Latino students, the event will feature a taco bar and regional music. Latino students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend.

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Foundation Hires New Vice President

Myrna Hall, interim vice president for university relations and development at San Diego State University, has been appointed vice president for development, Boulder campus, at the ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Foundation, Inc. Hall will work closely with the Boulder campus administration to develop and implement a fund-raising plan that will increase private support for ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder. Her appointment is effective Oct. 6.

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder Deals With Higher Enrollment

Schools and colleges at the University of Colorado at Boulder will receive extra funds to handle a larger-than-expected fall enrollment, according to an announcement by ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. Although the official fall census will not be taken until Sept. 10, preliminary figures indicate the fall enrollment may top 25,000, including possibly the largest freshman class in ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-BoulderÂ’s history. Freshmen may total as many as 4,220 -- or 40 more than the all-time high set in 1995.
