For the past two years due to the pandemic, Chancellor Philip DiStefano hasn’t been able to attend one of his favorite events of the year, the student-employee of the year luncheon.

Held each April, the luncheon recognizes the impact the several thousand Boulder student-employees have on campus each year. The event also honors the student-employee of the year, as well as other student nominees from across campus.

Hunter Sherraden

Student-employee of the year Hunter Sherraden

This year during a virtual ceremony, the award went to Hunter Sherraden, a senior majoring in integrative physiology who works as a journey leader mentor in the New Student and Family Programs office on campus. Max Gannett, a junior majoring in information science, was recognized as runner up.

The fact that Sherraden’s nominators described him as a “huge asset to our team in the last year” wasn’t a surprise to the chancellor.

“We depend on the invaluable contributions of students like Hunter, Max and all of our student-employees for the efficient and effective operation of the campus, and this year has been particularly challenging,” said DiStefano.

“We hope it’s mutually beneficial so that student-employees can defray the cost of their education, benefit from connections and community on campus, and perhaps prepare themselves for the job market upon graduation. We couldn’t do what we do without the help of student-employees, and Max and Hunter are exemplary leaders,” DiStefano said.

Hunter represents the best of Boulder and has been a huge asset to our team in the last year.”

One of Hunter’s accomplishments over the past year has been his work on our student leader orientation presentation called Being a Buff, which is a peer-to-peer presentation our Journey Leaders present to our new incoming students at orientation during fall and spring welcomes...He is also always one of the first people to volunteer to present and is a strong public speaker who is willing to share his own personal story and be vulnerable with the students about his own experiences as a new student on campus.”

“Hunter is a relational leader who challenges our team of students and professional staff and peers to do better.”
