If your supervisor has requested that you submit a self-evaluation, you might be wondering what they are hoping for. For supervisors, the self-evaluation process is a way to engage you in the performance review process, help give them a broader perspective of your accomplishments for the year, and promotes an open dialogue regarding how expectations and performance align.Â
Tips for Writing a Self-EvaluationÂ
- Give yourself time. Try to give yourself at least an hour or more to sit down and write your self-evaluation. This is your opportunity to share all you have accomplished and shouldn't be rushed.Â
- Write out a list of your accomplishments. This is the time to think about what you’ve achieved over the past year. Brainstorm and create a master list of the things you’ve done. For now, include everything you can think of and you can edit it down later.Â
- Gather relevant data if you can. The time it takes to gather your data will be regained in your ability to tell the story of your performance.Â
- Align your review with your manager’s or team’s goals. What goals were your manager or team striving to reach over the past year? How did your efforts contribute to reaching those goals?Â
- Provide insights to your challenges. While you want to remain positive about your performance throughout your evaluation, some successes don’t come without challenges.Â
- Begin to think about opportunities for the next year. Consider outlining the areas where you'd like to grow, and it's a good idea to demonstrate a plan for how to get there.
