There have been reports recently that police impersonators have stopped and questioned drivers in Boulder County and Denver metro cities. These impersonators are asking drivers why they are out when Colorado has a mandatory stay-at-home order in place.Ìý
None of the police departments in Boulder County are stopping drivers just to ask for justification as to why they have left home.
If you are stopped by someone who appears to be a police officer and are concerned that the person may be an impersonator, follow these possible options.
- Stop in a well-lit area.
- Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up. Inform the officer that you are calling to verify the officer’s validity.
- Call 911 and ask the dispatcher if an officer is conducting a traffic stop at your location.
- Ask the dispatcher to send a second officer to your location.
¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder police officers may be in a marked vehicle, an unmarked vehicle, on a motorcycle or bicycle. All police officers are required to carry an agency-issued identification badge and provide you with a business card that includes their name and the agency name and logo.
The stay-at-home order requires Coloradans to travel only for activities or tasks critical to their health and safety, or to the health and safety of their family or household members. Drivers are also allowed to go to and from "critical work." The current order is in place until April 26, 2020.
