Colorado Springs native and Boettcher Scholar Serene Singh is graduating with bachelor’s degrees in political science and journalism.
Next fall, she will commence graduate studies as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where she will pursue master’s degrees in criminology and criminal justice and evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation. Singh is the first woman in Boulder history to receive a Rhodes Scholarship and the first Buff to receive it since 1993. She aspires to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court justice.
At Boulder, she received the Truman ScholarshipԻ Fulbright award. Among many other activities, she served as chief justice for Student Government; was a member of the Presidents Leadership Class; founded the Colorado Bhangra Team and the National Sikh Youth Program; and was president of the Sikh Student Association and the Political Science Honor Society.
Singh also worked with Michelle Obama’s Global Girls Alliance and founded The Serenity Project, a nonprofit that works to uplift marginalized and at-risk women to expand society’s notions of female power and beauty.
“I’m going to miss this school so much,” Singh said of her time at Boulder. “I know I’m going to miss home. It’s just inevitable. I’m excited to be challenged, and to be uncomfortable, and to be scared a little bit,” she said. “I’m also really excited to see how I can help the journey of other Buffs.”
