Oregon Gov. Kate BrownOregon Gov., a Boulder alumna, will deliver the university'sspring commencement address at Folsom Field on May 10.Brown was invited by Boulder’s Senior Class Council.

“We are so fortunate to have Governor Brown come and speak to us on our commencement day. Her wisdom about courage, integrity and authenticity will inspire and challenge graduating Buffs to effect positive change in the world after leaving ,” said Emily Miller, Senior Class Council president.

Since taking office in 2015,Brown has made significant strides for Oregon’s economy, including raising the minimum wage and investing in green energy, education and public transportation. Brown is the first openly LGBTQ governor in the country. She succeeded Gov. John Kitzhaber upon his resignation and went on to win a 2016 special election.

From 2009 to 2015, she served as Oregon’s secretary of state and previously served 17 years as a state legislator. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental conservation with a certificate in women’s studies from Boulder in 1981.

DiStefano. “Governor Brown has been a strong supporter of working families and education. She embodies a spirit of public service, and we hope she will inspire our students to lead, innovate and make a difference in the world as she has done.”

The commencement ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, at Folsom Field.

“Commencement is the culmination of students’ achievements, and a touchstone moment for families who have worked hard to ensure their children have the tools they need to succeed,” said Brown. “I am honored to join students and parents on this exciting day. My time in Boulder shaped my journey through life, and I look forward to being back to share this moment with so many families.”
