University of Colorado Boulder Provost Russell L. Moore today announced the appointment of Sharon F. Matusik as the interim dean of the .
Matusik, who currently serves as senior associate dean for faculty and research and professor of strategyand entrepreneurship, will begin her new role in January 2017. She will take the helm from economist William Kaempfer, senior vice provost and associate vice chancellor for budget and planning, who has served in the role since mid-September.
Matusik’s research focuses on entrepreneurship, innovationand venture capital. For example, she has looked at topics such as how markets value the innovation activities of firms, what accounts for variation in profitability levels of entrepreneurial firms, how the diversification of a venture capital firm affects its performance, the development of risk capital markets around the globe and gains from innovation activities in emerging markets. Her work has been published in top international academic journals and is widely cited in the management field. She has also taught extensively at the undergraduate MBA executive and PhD levels.
Matusik has served in numerous other leadership roles, such as academic director of the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at the Leeds School and as aboard member for nonprofit organizations such as MBA Women International (formerly Graduate Women in Business,or GWIB). She speaks regularly on topics related to innovation and entrepreneurship and advises local entrepreneurial ventures. She is the 2014 recipient of the Leeds School's William H. Baughn Distinguished Service Award and has also received awards for her research, teaching and service to her profession. Matusik worked in the field of consulting before entering academics.

I believe she will build upon our previous successes and continue to improve the experiences of our students, faculty and staff.”
Moore also thanked Kaempfer for serving in the interim dean role for the past two months. “His ability to engage the Leeds community is a credit to his professionalism and demeanor. I appreciate his hard work and look forward to his return to my office.”
Matusik earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and English from Colby College in Maine and a doctoral degree in strategic management from the University of Washington. She has been at Boulder since 2004.
