The SLHS Department congratulates Vincent Salazar as the first recipient of the Marilyn Kaye Johnson Scholarship in Fall 2020. This scholarship provides $1,000 funding in the fall semester of Vincent’s first academic year. The Marilyn Kaye Johnson Scholarship is established in memory of Marilyn Kaye Johnson. Marilyn received a M.A. in Communications Disorders and Speech Science from in 1985. She dedicated over 20 years of her life to serving as a speech-language pathologist for K-12 students in the Navajo school system operated by the federal government’s Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). It was Marilyn’s complete devotion to her “kids” that made her special. Not only was she their speech therapist, she bought them gifts and supplied them with basics such as glasses and clothing that many Navajo families living on the reservation could simply not afford.
