Policies, Forms and Accommodations

As a student living in campus housing, the following are important forms, policies and accomodations to keep in mind. 

Residential Handbook

University Housing residents are expected to follow the guidelines set forth in the residential handbook.


Under 18 Guardian Consent Form

  • Students who are under 18 years of age at the time of contract submission must complete the Guardian Consent Form to finalize their application. There are two different versions of this form - one for the academic year and one for the summer
  • The Guardian Consent Form is available in the housing application in the My¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉäLiving portal once the student has been offered a contract. The Guardian Consent Form must be submitted within 3 days after submitting your housing application. Your application is considered incomplete until this form has been received and accepted.
  • Fill out the form in the housing application; electronically fill out each field, sign, save and upload the form into the housing application when prompted.
    • Only hand-signed (not typed) or electronic signatures with a date/time stamp will be accepted
  • It is important to understand that the residence hall environment expects an adult level of responsibility. Students are expected to be able to study and live independently and get along with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. It should also be known that the student will be assigned to any eligible housing and accommodations/exceptions are not made due to the age of the student. Students who are younger than 16 years of age must contact University Housing prior to living in student housing. The rules and regulations of living in the residence halls can be found in the residence hall handbook and within the Housing Contract.

Disability and Religious Accommodations

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder Disability Services reviews requests for housing and food accommodations for students with documented disability-related needs, on a case-by-case individualized basis. If you feel you require a housing or food accommodation, please submit your request to Disability Services as soon as possible and preferably as soon as you have submitted your application to University Housing. Please do not rely on your preferences in the University Housing application to ensure your needs are met. For instructions to request a housing or food accommodation, please visit ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Disability Services Housing and Food Accommodations.

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder reviews requests for religious accommodations for students who would not have the ability to observe their religious beliefs while living and eating in our residence halls. If you feel you require a religious accommodation, please submit your request to University Housing as soon as possible and preferably as soon as you have submitted your application to University Housing. Please do not rely on your preferences in the University Housing application to ensure your needs are met. 

Given that ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder has a freshman live-on requirement, University Housing will try to find accommodations within our 24 residence halls to meet your disability or religious-related needs prior to approving an exemption from the live-on requirement. Residence halls can accommodate various disability or religious-related needs through the options below:

  • Room/Apartment Access and Modifications 
  • Room/Apartment Reassignment
  • Dietary Needs
  • Visual/Hearing Needs
  • Assistance Animal

This process can take up to 10 business days, please plan accordingly if there are upcoming deadlines.

First-Year Live-On Requirement and Exemption

The university requires that all students admitted as first-year freshmen (defined as any student who graduated from high school within one year of enrollment confirmation term) live in a university residence hall and carry a traditional food plan for two academic-year semesters*, subject to the availability of space. Summer term(s) are not applicable toward this requirement.

  • Students that are younger than 16 years of age or older than 24 years of age should contact University Housing prior to submitting a housing application
  • *Incoming spring transfer students who are still in their first matriculated year are required to live in a university residence hall and carry a traditional meal plan for the spring semester.

Petition for Exemption to the Live On Requirement 

Should a first-year student wish to be released from living within campus housing, they may petition for an exemption to the live-on requirement by submitting the First-Year Release form in the My¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉäLiving portal. Students must meet one of the following criteria and provide documentation to be considered for release from the first-year live-on requirement:

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Graduated from high school more than one year ago (May/June 2023 or earlier)
  • Living with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) at the permanent address established by the university and within a commutable distance of 30 miles, determined by the University.
  • Student provided an extraordinary reason (*not related to medical, psychological or disability) with supporting evidence that the University deems appropriate to establish that Student should be released  from this requirement. COVID-19 generally will not warrant an extraordinary reason.

*Requests for release based on medical, psychological or disability related needs are reviewed and determined by Disability Services and not the first-year release process. Please direct your request to the Disability Housing Accommodations Process.

Students will not be released from the live-on requirement to move off campus (to live in an off-campus apartment or to live within a sorority/fraternity house, for example). 

IMPORTANT: Students approved to be released from the first-year live-on requirement and have housing contracts are charged for housing and food until an official check-out has occurred.  Additionally, cancellation charges apply based on the terms of the contract.  The release from the live-on requirement is not a release from the financial obligations of the housing contract.

Room Change Process

Students in the residence halls may request a housing change both before and after move-in.

There is no charge associated with submitting a Housing Change Request, however if we are able to accommodate your request for a change in room type, your per semester cost may change. Please see our rates and contracts page for more information.

After Occupancy Room Change Process

This process is available throughout the academic year. Students can request a change for when spaces become available. There is no timeline for when a change may be offered as housing is filled to capacity. Students who join the waitlist in August; however, may not be contacted until mid or late semester about a change option. Waitlist status can be obtained after Sept. 7 by emailing UniversityHousing@colorado.edu.

  • Fall Semester – Aug. 30 through Dec. 1 moves are offered
  • Spring Semester – Jan. 12 until Spring Break in March

Room changes do not include roommates. If you are assigned to a new room, you will also be assigned new roommates (with the exception of individual room assignments).

  • In the request, students may choose up to two hall/living experience (RAP, LLC, or Traditional) and room type preferences.
  • We recommend reviewing room rates and eligibility before submitting preferences.
  • Students have the option to choose two preferences but are not required to, both preferences are considered equally in this process and any offers will be for the first availability.
  • Room changes through this process are considered by date and time of submission, preferences, eligibility and availability.

Students will be notified if there is a room change available by email; with hall, room, and roommate information. They must respond within the given time frame to accept or decline the offer.

Students that accept, decline, or do not respond to an offer within the given timeframe are removed from the room change waitlist.

Students can submit a new request for the waitlist by contacting University Housing at universityhousing@colorado.edu to delete their original request.
