Prior to coming to ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä-Boulder, he was a Visiting Scientist at the in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
Formally trained in both Hispanic Linguistics (PhD, UCLA, 2014) and Sociology (PhD, UCLA, 2016), Prof. Raymond is an interdisciplinary scholar of language and social life. In his research and teaching, he brings together theories and methods from Conversation Analysis, Interactional Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Sociolinguistics to investigate language use in both mundane and institutional contexts, exploring how interactants ‘make sense’ with one another on a moment-by-moment basis as they move through interaction. He is particularly interested in situations of contact -- that is, when divergent languages, dialects, cultures, etc. come together in interaction -- with a primary focus on various aspects of the Latinx and Spanish-speaking experience in the United States. His work has appeared in a disciplinarily diverse set of journals which range from Linguistics (e.g., Language, Language in Society, Journal of Sociolinguistics), to Communication Studies (e.g., Research on Language and Social Interaction, Discourse & Communication), to Healthcare (e.g., Patient Education and Counseling).Ìý
