Her work focuses on water quality and utility risk management. She says that her research is only successful through collaboration and she will use the scholarship funding while “working with operators, regulators, and utility management to understand their experiences with risk management. I will use these funds to meet with my partners and collect data.&nbsp; I hope that my work can be used to support utilities as they navigate ever-changing environmental, regulatory, and technical contexts to provide safe water"</p><p><strong>Nadia Jorgensen</strong> (Advisor: <a href="/even/node/126" rel="nofollow">Scott Summers</a>), recipient of the Holly A. Cornell scholarship from Jacobs, says the scholarship will help with her future plans. “I hope to continue evaluating granular active carbon performance for controlling unregulated and regulated disinfection by-products across a range of water matrices and developing laboratory skills to analyze contaminants in samples.”</p><p><strong>Emma Payne</strong> (Advisor: <a href="/even/node/271" rel="nofollow">Karl Linden</a>) is receiving the Dr. Philip C. Singer Scholarship. Her thesis is about improving UV advanced oxidation efficiency through tailored wavelength and radical promoter innovations. Emma in interested in passing on her knowledge to the next generation, "I am committed to being a good mentor and teacher, in addition to researcher and graduate student. As much as I thoroughly believe that my research will advance the field of environmental engineering, I also recognize that helping others to achieve their goals and contribute to the field is equally important. She studied chemistry and geology at Smith College, but decided to switch to environmental engineering for her PhD because she wanted to apply her research to help solve environmental problems.&nbsp;</p><p>Magliozzi is pursuing her PhD as a partnership between Boulder and the U.S. Geological Survey, with Professor Joseph Ryan at Boulder and chemist Brett Poulin at the USGS. She is studying dissolved organic matter-mercury redox chemistry with electrochemistry.&nbsp;</p><p>This summer, Magliozzi will take two trips to several Arctic national parks in Alaska (Bering Land Bridge, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic, Kobuk Valley and Noatak) as part of a partnership between the National Park Service and the USGS to study the impact of permafrost thaw on hydrological regimes in arctic ecosystems with Poulin and other USGS and National Park Service scientists.</p><p>The Aiken Fellowship was established to honor George R. Aiken for his significant contributions to understanding aquatic ecosystems during his 40-year career as an organic geochemist with the USGS.&nbsp;</p><p>Magliozzi’s research is a direct continuation of Aiken's dissolved organic matter and mercury research. Mercury is a globally mobile neurotoxin, and its fate in the environment greatly affects ecosystem and human health. Her research investigates UV-LED disinfection technology for biofouling mitigation during irrigation with recycled wastewater effluent. The project is an international collaboration with Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology.</p><p>Through the Engineering for Developing Communities certificate program, Randall has worked with Water for People on water and sanitation projects in Uganda. Her experience with drinking water, wastewater and water reuse began in 2014 with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR).&nbsp;</p><p>As a student engineer, Randall worked with a team that investigated and monitored greenhouse gas emissions caused by water transportation and management techniques across California. They also examined the role of water reuse to meet emission reduction goals within DWR.&nbsp;</p><p>After graduating with a BS in biological systems engineering from the University of California Davis in 2017, Randall worked as a process engineer on development-related projects in Brazil. Her experiences, paired with her position at DWR, instilled a passion for improving water quality in water-scarce and low-income regions.&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>“It is an honor to receive the WateReuse Association Colorado Student Scholarship,” Randall said. “I would like to thank the WateReuse Association, and my community at Boulder, for supporting my research pursuits as a young professional in the water sector.”</p></blockquote><p>The WateReuse Association is the nation’s only trade association dedicated to advancing laws, policy, funding and public acceptance of recycled water.
