Professor becomes associate editor of popular science journal

Professor Shelly Miller has joined the popular science journal (ES&T) as an associate editor.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Miller said. “I have wanted to get involved in editing for a while now. I really appreciated the new editor’s vision and there are quite a few female associate editors, so I am very happy to be part of this dynamic diverse team.”

is a professor in the Environmental Engineering Program and in the Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering. She received her BS in applied mathematics from and MS and PhD degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the .

Her research focuses on indoor air quality, urban air pollution, health effects, air pollution mitigation, and development and evaluation of indoor air quality control measures. Miller received the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow from the University of Colorado in 1996. In 2000, she received an Environmental Achievement Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 8 for her work assessing indoor air quality in schools.

As an associate editor, Miller will be responsible for reviewing all material published in ES&T alongside the editor in chief and fellow associate editors.

“We are looking for novelty and importance. I’d like for the paper to be appreciated by a wide audience, even people outside of the specific field of the paper, and to learn something new and interesting from the paper. We are hoping to expand our repertoire of air quality papers as well as new authors,” Miller said.

She added that “I’d like to further what is known in the areas of exposure to environmental toxic chemicals, how to reduce exposures and use of these compounds. I am also interested in promoting new fields like indoor air chemistry and important environment-changing sciences like climate change.”

ES&T is a part of the American Chemical Society’s publications, committed to providing access to environment-related information and research through peer-reviewed journals and e-books.The articles published in ES&T present objective reports and analyses of the major advances, trends and challenges in environmental science, technology and policy for a diverse professional audience.
