Postdoctoral Research Opportunity in the Field of Environmental Organic Analytical Chemistry

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

At the Department of Environmental Chemistry, there is an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Field of Environmental Organic Analytical Chemistry

There are a multitude of organic pollutants in the aquatic environment which might impact aquatic ecosystems, yet current monitoring programs and mitigation measures are very limited. Suspect and non-target screening using high-resolution mass spectrometry combined with chromatography, appropriate ionization and computational tools for data evaluation enables a more comprehensive characterization of the vast universe of organic pollutants.

We seek for someone who wants to develop non-target workflows further by improving analytical methods and/or data evaluation methods. As the position is not connected to a specific project, candidates can bring in their own ideas and contribute to other projects in the department. Current main topics of the group are analysis of polar compounds and their transformation products in surface, ground, waste water as well as sediments and biota using LC-HRMS/MS and linking of the exposure to effects via risk assessment and biological tools. The position is funded for a two-year period with an attractive remuneration package. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to a practical course on organic trace analysis of ETH Zurich and to supervise master students in support of the research program. The location is Dübendorf near Zurich.

We encourage applications from outstanding and highly motivated candidates with a doctoral degree in environmental or analytical chemistry or environmental engineering and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. Previous hands-on experience with organic environmental chemistry, mass spectrometry or data sciences would be an advantage.

We are looking for a creative individual with strong interest to work in a team, communication skills and excellent time management abilities. Analytical thinking, problem-solving attitude, flexibility, ability to work independently and communicate clearly are all essential for this position. Candidates are expected to have excellent academic records and be fluent in written and spoken English.

Eawag offers a unique and is committed to promoting equal opportunities for women and men and to support the compatibility of family and work. Applications from women are especially welcome. For more information about Eawag and our work conditions please consult this .

Applications should include a cover letter giving a description of their motivation to apply and highlighting their relevant experience and specific interests within the non-target screening field, curriculum vitae, copies of academic qualifications, a summary of their PhD thesis, and the names (with Email addresses and phone numbers) of at least two potential referees.

Deadline for applications is 22 February 2020.
