Position Title: Communications Associate
Employment Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports To: LWOG Executive Director
Office Location: 6800 Nimbus Road, Longmont, CO 80503
Salary Range: $15- $20/hour
 
General Description
The successful applicant will be an excellent communicator and detail-oriented person interested in providing outreach and administrative support to a small watershed-based non-profit located near Niwot, Colorado. The Communications Associate is challenged to assist the Executive Director in executing day-to-day management and administrative tasks. The associate will provide support for Lefthand Watershed Oversight Group outreach tasks, meetings, grant submittals and tracking, and restoration project implementation in a community of diverse situations and needs. This will require strong communication and interpersonal skills and an interest in watershed restoration and protection. Technical expertise or knowledge in communication or an administrative related field is desired. In this position, you will collaborate with other Colorado Watershed Coalitions, as well as local, county, state, and federal agencies involved with watershed management. You will also be working with contractors, engineers, and a wide variety of natural resource professionals. Training, networking and career development opportunities will be offered in the performance of these duties.
 
Supervision Received and Exercised
The associate shall work under the direction of the Executive Director in carrying out outreach and administrative activities and functions of LWOG.
 
Examples of Duties
Primary duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

  • Complete education and outreach tasks including updating website, developing a newsletters or mail chimp campaigns, social media campaigns, maintaining a landowner database, organizing outreach and volunteer events, carrying out marketing and fundraising tasks.
  • Assist Executive Director and Project Manager in conducting landowner outreach tasks related to our watershed restoration and stewardship projects.
  • Assist Executive Director in preparing for and conducting LWOG Board meetings.
  • Assist in project management tasks, taking meeting minutes, filing, processing invoice requests, and ensuring compliance with the CDBG-DR Capacity Grant requirements
  • Assist in developing marketing material, including photo documenting conditions in the watershed, and keeping an organized log of photos.

 
Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 1 year of experience working in a professional environment or equivalent.  Natural resource and communication or marketing experience will be helpful.  Understanding of watershed and restoration science desired.
  • Ability to express compassion in addressing resident and landowner issues. 
  • Excellent skills in interpersonal relationships, organizational effectiveness, and community outreach.
  • Well organized, self-starter, detail-oriented, and adaptable with the ability to manage both routine and complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with watershed concepts.
  • Familiarity with Colorado water issues/politics.
  • Ability to prepare meeting materials and presentations and assist in facilitating meetings.
  • Skilled in creative word formatting or adobe illustrator or similar to develop simple and visually appealing handouts.
  • Writing, presentation and public relations skills.
  • Ability to work independently, establish work priorities and manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Word and Excel, ability to learn new computer applications, and website maintenance.
  • Experience with Facebook, Wordpress, MailChimp, and Adobe Acrobate Pro
  • A valid Colorado Driver’s License and ability to pass background check including a good driving record. Must have own vehicle, mileage reimbursement available.

 
Working Conditions
Work is performed inside and outside both day and night, under varying and extreme weather conditions, and could include frequent driving of employee’s personal vehicle. Field conditions will include steep, unstable terrain, proximity to fast-moving water, proximity to highway traffic, and typical conditions associated with travel in the foothills and plains of the Rocky Mountain region.  Work may include working weekends.  Work includes but is not limited to exposure to sun, noise, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, and oils, moving vehicles, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching overhead and above shoulders, use of both hand and fingers, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time.  Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed.  Must have correctable near and far vision, ability to hear, speak, and write.  Work also includes the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and the ability to utilize communication equipment.

Salary and Position Details
$15-$20/hour. 16-24 hours/week. Ideal start date is in early August. No benefits are available for this position. The location of the office for the position will be at the Left Hand Water District office, 6800 Nimbus Road in Longmont CO. The initial engagement length of the position is five months with possibility of extension.
