We’ll explore a selection of comedies and tragedies, a history, and a romance, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Hamlet, Richard III, and The Tempest. We’ll also visit Special Collections in Norlin Library to see rare texts, artifacts, and students’ projects from previous classes. By the end of the semester, you’ll design and present your own creative Shakespeare project.</p> <p>Reading List:&nbsp;A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Hamlet, Richard III, and The Tempest</p> <p>Taught by <a href="mailto:teresa.nugent@colorado.edu?subject=ENGL%203000-100" rel="nofollow">Teresa Nugent</a>.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Mon, 14 Oct 2019 18:37:46 +0000 Anonymous 2147 at /english ENGL 1800: American Ethnic Literatures - Hip Hop Cultures (CORE) (Spring 2020) /english/2019/10/14/engl-1800-american-ethnic-literatures-hip-hop-cultures-core-spring-2020 <span>ENGL 1800: American Ethnic Literatures - Hip Hop Cultures (CORE) (Spring 2020)</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-10-14T12:34:18-06:00" title="Monday, October 14, 2019 - 12:34">Mon, 10/14/2019 - 12:34</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/english/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/screen_shot_2019-11-06_at_9.14.32_am.png?h=4552f130&amp;itok=AAJgx5Tq" width="1200" height="600" alt="Kayne West Art"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/79"> Courses </a> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/121"> Featured Courses </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/93" hreflang="en">General Literature &amp; Language</a> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/459" hreflang="en">Spring 2020</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-content-media ucb-article-content-media-above"> <div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/english/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/article-image/screen_shot_2019-11-06_at_9.14.32_am.png?itok=-W7-uJdX" width="1500" height="1952" alt="Kayne West Art"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-text d-flex align-items-center" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p>This course explores the evolution of hip hop from its roots in the South Bronx to its worldwide influence in the present day--from Kendrick Lamar to Cardi B, Drake to Megan Thee Stallion. We’ll use the tools of close reading and literary analysis to study hip hop’s many forms and themes. Our primary focus will be on rap’s lyric craft, but we’ll also consider rap within the broader context of hip hop’s other basic elements—DJ-ing, breaking, and graffiti. Hip hop’s aesthetic culture is a means to confront race, politics, gender, and sexuality. Through a combination of lecture and discussion, we’ll work together to develop a language for talking about the many cultures of hip hop.</p> <p>Reading List:&nbsp;Soren Baker, The History of Gangster Rap Kathy Iandoli, God Save the Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip-Hop Ed Piskor, Hip Hop Family Tree Brian Coleman, Check the Technique Hanif Abdurraqib, Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest</p> <p>Taught by <a href="mailto:Adam.bradley@colorado.edu?subject=ENGL%201800" rel="nofollow">Dr. Adam Bradley</a>.</p> <p><strong>Additional Information:&nbsp;</strong>Arts Sci Core Curr: Human Diversity<br> Arts Sci Gen Ed: Distribution-Arts Humanities<br> Arts Sci Gen Ed: Diversity-U.S. Perspective<br> Departmental Category: General Literature and Language</p> <p>&nbsp;</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Mon, 14 Oct 2019 18:34:18 +0000 Anonymous 2145 at /english ENGL 1600: Introduction to American Literature (Spring 2020) /english/2019/10/14/engl-1600-introduction-american-literature-spring-2020 <span>ENGL 1600: Introduction to American Literature (Spring 2020)</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-10-14T12:30:45-06:00" title="Monday, October 14, 2019 - 12:30">Mon, 10/14/2019 - 12:30</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/english/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/simon-fairhurst-oho7drkeucu-unsplash.jpg?h=9d524b69&amp;itok=pucSc5P3" width="1200" height="600" alt="Statue of liberty"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/79"> Courses </a> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/121"> Featured Courses </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/english/taxonomy/term/93" hreflang="en">General Literature &amp;
