In Colorado, 275 gun retailers currently participate in the Gun Shop Project. This initiative, created by a New Hampshire retailer in 2009, is a public-private effort to enlist firearm advocates in the fight against suicide by gun. Today, 21 states participate in the project, and public health agencies are also involved, providing educational materials and support for thousands of gun shops.

At ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä, researchers at the  (CSPV), which is part of the  at ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder, plan to study the project’s effectiveness. Senior research associate Sabrina Arredondo Mattson and her team plan to use a $2 million grant awarded by the CDC to study the influence that gun shops can have in suicide prevention.
