Muralism and [Re]definition of Community
What happens to a community when it casts itself on the walls that surround it? Using the murals of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles and the recent Indigenous Mural Space executed in the Visual Arts Complex on ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder campus as particular examples, this talk will examine the impact and
function of murals with respect to cultural identity formation, and the creation of community in otherwise oppressive spaces.
Héctor RamÃrez received his MFA in Fiction from ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder in 2018, where he produced a novel manuscript centered around Boyle Heights and the murals of that community. He is the Assistant Director of the Upward Bound Program at ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder, and was the project director for the
Indigenous Mural Space.
