Since the program started in 1997, the sustainability awards have celebrated inventive programs and initiatives that directly reduce resource use, enhance social equity and cohesion, or promote a culture of sustainability at ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder.Ìý

The award committee recognized NEST for pursuing projects that contribute to our understanding of big issues like climate change, human rights, resource scarcity, environmental microplastics, vanishing glaciers, habitat loss and fracking.Ìý

NEST further addresses big issues as part of the campuswide Grand Challenge initiative, ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder’s commitment to transforming the landscape of space exploration and finding pathways to address significant issues faced by our planet.Ìý

On April 20, the Office for Outreach and Engagement, housed within the division of Continuing Education, awarded Joanne Guillery the 2022 Anne K. Heinz Staff Award for Excellence in Outreach and Engagement.

The annual award is given to a staff member who goes above and beyond to establish and support scholarship between ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder and outside communities. Each awardee is granted $5,000 to support program needs identified by the staff member and sponsoring department.

This year, Guillery was nominated by Erin Espelie, co-director of NEST and CMCI associate professor, for her work as the NEST office manager. As a half-time employee, Guillery introduced NEST to tens of thousands of people by stewarding over 100 exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other events. Espelie also credited NEST’s increased productivity during the COVID-19 pandemic to Guillery’s approach to, and passion for, the work.
