Artistic Art Histories (in Southeast Asia)

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä the lecture: What kinds of knowledge and understanding are engendered when contemporary artists engage, in their artwork, with overlooked histories of (post)colonial modern art? How do their practices—which I call artistic art histories—contribute to the ongoing decolonization of the discipline of art history?

¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä the Scholar: Roger Nelson is an art historian and curator, currently Assistant Professor of Art History in the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was the 2022 recipient of the A.L. Becker Southeast Asian Literature in Translation Prize. His current book project considers artistic art histories in Southeast Asia. He is co-founding co-editor of Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia, a scholarly journal published by NUS Press.
