Departmental Overview

The Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) at UC Berkeley promotes teaching and research on East Asia and Southeast Asia in all disciplines and professional programs. The Institute and its regional centers sponsor a wide variety of activities including academic seminars and colloquia series, public lectures, cultural events, and other programs with the mission to foster interaction and facilitate deeper understanding among the academic, business, and professional communities on issues concerning the Asia-Pacific region.

Center for Southeast Asia Studies Overview

The Center for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS) was founded in 1960 for the development of research and teaching on the countries of Southeast Asia - now covering Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam - and the region as a whole.

CSEAS promotes the expansion of Southeast Asian Studies on the UC Berkeley campus by facilitating faculty and graduate research, by funding language instruction, by presenting lecture series and cultural programs, by organizing public outreach and international conferences, and by hosting visitors and scholars.

CSEAS is a consortium U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center, with UCLA's Center for Southeast Asian Studies(link is external), one of five National Resource Centers for Southeast Asia in the country. The consortium helps students and faculty at each campus collaborate on particular programs (conferences, workshops, and speaker series), furthers the development of campus resources devoted to the field (such as library acquisitions) and promotes course development and improvements in the quality and accessibility of language instruction.

Responsibilities Overview

Involves designing, conducting, promoting, and supporting various research and public educational programs at the Center for Southeast Asia Studies, including conferences, workshops, faculty support programs, student fellowships, contracts and grants administration (including the Center's Federally-funded National Resource Center and FLAS grants), and other academic and public programs. Researches and assesses research, outreach, and educational needs and interests for targeted audiences, and develops programs, materials, technology and/or learning approaches accordingly. Involves the processing and servicing of a variety of operational and financial transactions and services. Includes accounts receivable, accounts payable, data collection and entry, customer servicing, and reporting. Identifies new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, and organizing related programs/events; cultivates, stewards, and may solicit donor prospects.

Plans and develops new programs and curricula, and adjusts existing programs in a research and public education environment.
Programs may include colloquia; special workshops and conferences; fellowship competitions; language-tutoring programs; and visiting delegation receptions. Actively participates/collaborates with faculty chair and executive committee in long-range strategic planning for research and public educational programs. Participates in developing constituencies and promoting programs to target audiences.
Serves as institutional liaison to peer research institutions locally, nationally, and abroad.
Assists faculty chair to recruit, select, orient, and evaluate prospective program partnerships.
Manages/oversees the Visiting Scholar Program, including managing the application and approval process, arrival procedures, visa compliance, and problem- solving activities.
Identifies and develops evaluation tools for programs.
Evaluates and adjusts programs through participant evaluations and the level of interest shown.
Under general supervision, assists in implementing specific activities for specific fundraising programs and activities, including grant writing/management and proposal development.
Conducts research on friends, corporations, and foundations to identify prospects.
Facilitates and supports own and others' special program events.
Plans and schedules programs and identifies program topics.
Works with IEAS Business Manager to develop, prepare, and reconcile budget for the program.
Assists with ensuring that financial processing functions, which may include Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, are performed with accuracy and that daily operations run smoothly. Processes standardized financial data and transactions.
May serve as a work leader to junior staff and student assistants, including advising staff at sub-centers.
May provide training or mentoring to graduate students and visitors.

Required Qualifications

Thorough and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.
Thorough knowledge of current research affecting countries in the Southeast Asia region, Southeast Asians in the world, and Southeast Asia Studies. Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new programs to meet organizational needs.
Proficient in at least one Southeast Asian language.
Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, Open Berkeley Website platform, and PowerPoint.

Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Continuing education in a related field.

Salary & Benefits

This is a three year, 100% full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
This position is exempt and paid monthly. The annual salary for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $56,500.00 - $80,000.00.
