Lifetime achievement in criminology
Sociology Professor Terry Thornberry is the 2008 recipient of the Edwin H. Sutherland Award, the highest award for a criminologist, given by the American Society of Criminology. The award, established in 1960 and deemed “prestigious” by the National Research Council, recognizes outstanding contributions to theory or research in criminology on the etiology of criminal and deviant behavior, the criminal justice system, corrections, law, or justice.
Thornberry, who also directs the Research Program on Problem Behavior at the Institute for Behavioral Science, is being honored for his work in directing the Rochester Youth Development Study, a longitudinal and broad-ranging study of anti-social behavior. The study, which has produced dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles, is continuing.
The Edwin H. Sutherland Award was previously won by Del Elliott, a sociology professor emeritus.
